Endorsements are pouring in for the candidates in the crowded race to unseat state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. from office.
The field of Espada opponents has dropped from four to three since Desirée Pilgrim-Hunter, a community organizer, dropped her bid for the seat. She has yet to endorse anybody but says that, right now, her sights are set on Gustavo Rivera, former aide to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, as the candidate best positioned to take Mr. Espada out.
“I’m waiting to see what develops first, because it is paramount that Pedro Espada does not return to office. Who’s the best person to unseat him remains to be seen,” she said, adding that she is waiting for the result of petition challenges to “determine what the field looks like” before she backs anyone.
But Mr. Rivera can now count the Working Families Party, the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club and Councilman Oliver Koppell among his official supporters.
Fernando Tirado and Community Board 8’s Dan Padernacht remain in the race.
